Subject: [arts-for-life] Talk: Creative Approach to Violence

Hi everyone,

I'm attaching the announcement for a presentation I'm making at the =
Library of Congress on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 2:30, in room LJ-119 in =
the Thomas Jefferson Building (the beautiful one). It's based on my =
research at the Kluge Center there, where I'm currently holding the =
David B. Larson Fellowship for Spirituality and Health, and is free and =
open to the public. (For those of you interested in applying for this =
fellowship, I'll send the new RFP from the library later today.)

In case you're unable to open the attachment (Word Perfect), it says: =
"The God with Two Faces: Transforming Interpersonal and Cultural =
Violence through Art, Myth, and Ritual."=20

Basically, I'll describe the ritualistic process for becoming violent at =
both the personal and societal levels, and how creative process, =
specifically the expressive arts model -- based on ancient wisdom =
practices and aesthetic rather than moral or medical model values -- can =
transform violent attitudes and behaviors into life-affirming and =
compassionate ones. It's based on my own and others' experience and lots =
of research. It will be an overview of my book, Embracing the Dark: A =
Creative Approach to Violence in America, now in progress.=20

A summary of my research direction can be found on the Institute for =
Transformation Through the Arts web site: www.arts-for-life.org. (Click =
on "Articles," then on "Book Summary.") Topics I'm going to touch on in =
both the talk and book: the roots of violence and the violentization =
process; Emergence -- where ancestral mind meets modern science; the =
daimonic; myth vs. narrative; ritual and liminal (threshold or sacred) =
space; the hero/warrior and shamanic journeys; expressive arts, =
surrealism, and the daimonic; the creative transformation model; =
peacemaking as a turbulent spiritual process; and creative =
transformation as a potential Third Way in our bipolar American culture.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have worked creatively with violent kids or adults, =
or are using any of the arts for peacemaking/conflict resolution and =
would be willing to be interviewed about your experience and =
observations for my book, please contact me.
