I wouldn't worry about street culture. In my experience, these kids are hungry for the deep tales, the hero's journey, the stories about leaving home, facing death, finding helpers etc. These stories speak directly to their experience and feed their souls. One excellent resource is Michael Meade's "Men and the Water of Life." Clarissa Estes has an excellent section about rage in "Women Who Run With the Wolves."

I second whoever suggested odds Bodkins "The Rage of Hercules." Also the Grail story - both excellent choices.
"The Tiger's Whisker, The Crescent Moon Bear" (variants of the same tale are good.) I found the Firebird to work really well with boys....I still remember the day I told the tale and Ivan picked up the Golden feather against the advice of his horse....one boy said, "That feather was a gun for me."

On the flip side, a lot of these people pretty much missed childhood, so they'll also enjoy stories that are just for fun - funny stories, ghost stories, real life stories (the latter are THE best way to get people talking, if that's what you want)

If you wanna work with the hip hop stuff - we had a really good time having a group of kids WRITE raps, after considerable work with stories. However we had a really excellent teenager (about 19) on our team who taught a very elegant lesson about how to do it. The results were interesting - like a rap version of their own person hero's journeys - and plenty of rage was expressed there too.

It's like once they were exposed to deep narrative, they could easily transpose it to a medium they were comfortable with.

I am a psychotherapist working with people who have experienced things no
one should ever have to. I work with adults, teenagers, and children, and
the 3As are my stock in trade: abuse, addiction, and anger.

Right now I have a group of 12 very angry teenagers, and am looking for
ways to reach through their rage and cynicism (these are kids with good
reason to be angry and cynical). Is anyone aware of any songs, videos,
anger management approaches that reflect hip hop/street culture?

I would also be interested in stories that I might tell ( and which,
preferably wouldn't mean I'd have to go hip hop -- kind of hard when you're
in your mid-50s, even if you are pushing 40!).

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Daly
