As far as I know it is a Jewish folktale from Eastern Europe. A sweet
version is by Phoebe Gilman, published by Ashton Scholastic. She uses the
repeating refrain, "there was just enough material to make a ........" .
When even the button goes missing, she ends with " and there was just enough
material to make a STORY." Rather nice.
