Greetings all,

I'd like to pass on news of a worthwhile event led by excellent teachers in=20
Wales in a unique location; an authentic replica of a stone age Celtic=20
roundhouse with a thatched roof like people there lived in 5,000 years ago.

I have been there and have enjoyed learning from these teachers. I wanted to=
=20
share the news of this event in case you or someone you know may want to=20
attend.

The Ritual Cycle of the Year
A Storytellers' Retreat
with Hugh Lupton and Eric Maddern
at Cae Mabon
Wales, United Kingdom
Sun 12th to Friday 17th June 2005

For ten years Hugh Lupton and Eric Maddern have been exploring the =E2=80=
=9CMatter of=20
Britain=E2=80=9D with a band of merry storytellers, gathered from across the=
land.=20
Each year we've come to northwest Wales to the welcome embrace of the Talies=
in=20
Trust at Ty Newydd, where we've walked the hills, visited spiritually resona=
nt=20
places and delved into the profound relationship between storytelling and th=
e=20
mythological landscape.=20

It's been an extraordinary journey. Three times we've told the Four Branches=
=20
of the Mabinogion, the last a six-hour epic in Eric's Roundhouse. We've look=
ed=20
into the story of Parsifal and the Wounded King, dreamed back to the Lost=20
Gods and Goddesses and the Totemic Animals of Britain, unraveled the =E2=80=
=9CBattle of=20
the Trees=E2=80=9D and found old tales of trees. We've visited the Celtic Ot=
herworld=20
and peered into the times of Dark Age Arthur by retelling the story of =E2=
=80=9CCulhwch=20
and Olwen=E2=80=9D. And in 2004 we explored the culminating myth of Britain,=
the=20
medieval legend of King Arthur.

This has not been a =E2=80=9Ctaught course=E2=80=9D, rather a shared investi=
gation by peers=20
of something that fascinates and intrigues us all. It's been an opportunity=20
for us to get excited together, to learn from each other, to come to know mo=
re=20
deeply the mythic ancestral heritage of these islands. We've eschewed an=20
academic approach in favour of understanding by re-living the stories.

In 2005 Ty Newydd is closed for major renovation. So for this, our eleventh=20
retreat, we are moving to Cae Mabon, Eric's stunningly beautiful elemental=20
retreat centre in western Snowdonia. Centred on a thatched Celtic Roundhouse=
Cae=20
Mabon has, for more than ten years, been growing steadily into what is now a=
=20
unique and breathtaking place to gather, delve and tell. See www.caemabon.co=
.uk=20
for further information and pictures.

Our theme for 2005 is FROST AND FIRE: The Ritual Cycle of the Year. The=20
annual seasonal cycle has been religiously celebrated in Britain for thousan=
ds of=20
years. Beltane and Samhain (the beginnings of the light and dark halves of t=
he=20
year) have held primary place in the traditional calendar. But the other=20=
=E2=80=9C
cross-quarter=E2=80=9D festivals - Imbolc and Lammas - as well the solstices=
and the=20
equinoxes, have also been important.

On this retreat we'll look for the stories, songs and customs that are=20
associated with each of these eight calendrical markers; we'll dig out the c=
ultural=20
traditions that lend weight and meaning to the main festivals of the ancient=
=20
British year. And, as we approach midsummer, in the climax to our exploratio=
n,=20
we will collectively retell the ritual cycle of the year.

Earlier our special guest will be the brilliant speaker Ronald Hutton,=20
historian and author of many books, including =E2=80=9CThe Stations of the S=
un=E2=80=9D.

y=20
