MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Greetings all, I'm new to the list! I'm Charlene Fletcher, originally from Indianapolis, IN. I studied in Washington, DC and I am currently residing in Baton Rouge, LA. I perform African & African-American folktales and personal stories. In response to the question about abusive stories...I have had experience with this topic. As someone who performs personal stories I explain the scenario and my feelings at the time. However, I always bring out the positive life lessons learned through the stories. For example, if I am delievering a story about rape, I would explain the thoughts and emotions of the character at that time and how the experience offered a new positive outlook on life. Thus, inspiring the audience to be survivors or overcomers. I'd never dwell on the negative. I'd recommend staying away from tragic stories if there is no ray of light or hope to deliver.
