Bob, These are all good questions and I will try to answer each: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Kanegis" > Is there a difference between reproducing the article and providing a > hyperlink url? Yes, sharing a url is fair because it is sending people to the source. It is similiar to sending someone to the bookstore or library. > What about quoting passages as a jumping off place for discussion?.... at > what length does a quote cross the line and become unnaceptable > reproduction? This comes under fair usage. There is a general rule that quotes should not be over 250 words. The important aspect when quoting is making sure that one cites one's source and only enough to demonstrate the point. > Do teachers get permission from authors when they reproduce articles or > xerox stories for reading and discussion? > (Fair use issues) Yes, they must obtain permission. This has changed the way many professors now teach because they cannot afford the fees to use the materials. The good old days of copying materials for students are over with at most major Universities. > Healingstory has always seemed to me to be a completely non-commercial > intellectual forum. I don't really see the harm in reproducing an article > that appears in a daily newspaper... (the onlineversion of the NY Times > encourages emailing their articles) but will abide by list rules. It is not a matter of how we see it or rationlize it. As cyber law is developed the issue of copyright is a big issue and list owners are urged to keep to the letter of the law and to show in good faith that they are trying to respect the copyright rules. This is the basic approach of most listowners using stjohns.maelstrom. Thank you for the good questions.
