There are others on the list with far more experience in applied storytelling for health than I, but I wanted to respond to your comment about convincing the dean to add storytelling to the university's curriculum. (I know it's not a healing story issue, but others may be interested in this as well.) Are you a member of the National Communication Association? From what I am told, Joseph Sobol (who heads the master's program in storytelling at East Tennessee State University) is heading a pre-conference track on storytelling in the university at the New Orleans conference in November. (He did similar for the National Storytelling Network conference last summer.) You might want to double-check with NCA (natcom.org), bec. it's not on their website yet, but that's what I hear. I teach storytelling in the Communication dept. at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, a state school. In my case, I jwalked into the Chair's office (I was teaching public speaking at the time) and suggested we do it, and next thing I knew, she was making it happen. Sounds like it's a little more difficult in Austin. But if you need bolstering in that area--although it sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now--I can give you names of a number of schools that offer the classes now, sample syllabi, etc. Anyway, your Belize project sounds fantastic--I wish you the best of the luck. Please keep us all posted. Best, Caren Neile | ||
