stories...

Folktales and other stories can enable healing.
However, if you want to follow the old saying, "get
it from the horses mouth," think about, "what stories
might whatever 'part, parts' of your body, mind or
feelings would they tell if given a chance?" Maybe what
they have to say won't be the type of tale that you'd
tell for a performance and may some of you could.
Whatever emerges, may not be something for a performance
or you'd want to share it with other people. Then, who
knows, as you work with what you receive, eventually you
might create a yarn that you could share with other
people.

I'll give an example, In 1973 I entered therapy with a
man who used Transactional Analysis and Gestalt therapies
along with some of the traditional methods. It was a
year after my father's death, and he was the one person
whom I often consoled myself with as know he loved me
unconditionally. When he died, I was "pisted off,"
although I denied for an entire year.

In the gestalt process I was told to answer the following
question with the 1st thing that came forth, "If I show
you my tears...." The first thing was, "if I show you my
tears, you won't like me. If I show you my tears, "you'll
get angry." If I show you my tears, "You'll hurt me."

And no sooner was the last sentence out of my mouth and a
flood of tears poured and poured. I caught a glimpse of
Jim's hand waving back several people in the group who
attempted to come to hold me. I learned later he wanted
me to cry, and especially cry as an adult before other
adults. You see, I couldn't cry at my father's funeral
because I was an adult, 33yrs old, and I had the idea I
had to be strong. WRONG! You betcha.... and over the
following year I began to learn that I was wrong about
stuffing feelings.

Though the gestalt process wasn't a folktale, fairy tale
or even a personal story, it was a tiny, tiny piece of my
life's story. My point is that I know from my
personal and professional experiences that sometimes,
folktales, fairy tales, the personal tales of other
people, all genre's can contribute to our healing, if and
when it truly touches our heart, mind, soul, emotions,
and whatever else about us. Just as this is true about
us, it's also true about whatever clients, students, etc.
with whom we might work. I've learned to avoid putting
limitations on how I've used and use stories. And, I
consistantly encourage other people to consider doing the
same for themselves.

I've learned that I as I also learned to trust my
healing, I could share some of my stories with them to
assist their trusting themselve. Some people can do it
without "concrete examples from the people who are
helping them." And, some people need to see or hear
about their how their healing helpers as well as other
people have helped their healing. Go for it!!

Peace,
Julie of Storytel
