Dear Gail,
I so enjoyed reading about your application of story. Our philosophies and
approach are very similar. I work with people who have chronic diseases
(and grieve the loss of their formerly healthy self) and help them to find
meaning in what they are experiencing so they can integrate their chronic
disease into a full and whole life. Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen (author of
KITCHEN TABLE WISDOM) wrote the Foreword for my book, MEDITATIONS ON
DIABETES: STRENGTHENING YOUR SPIRIT IN EVERY SEASON. In the Foreword she
says, "Meaning helps us to see in the dark."

I'm not a chat room person, Gail. I feel a little overwhelmed by the format
we seem to be establishing. Thank you for letting me share with you what I
do. I feel a connection with your work and look forward to meeting you one
day.

Best regards,
Cathy

I use story in working with grief and bereavement. There are similarities I
think (when we are ill, we are grieving our health and our ability to depend
on our bodies) and so I would add another therapeutic use to your list
Andre.
That would be helping the patient to integrate this experience into her/his
life story, in other words, to make or find meaning in this part of his/her
story.
